WESTBOROUGH, Mass. – It’s a new year and a new season for the Westborough boys hockey team and their coach Tom Temple says the team is off to a good start.

Going 4-3 so far this season, the Rangers hope to accomplish several things in their games.

“I think first we want to try and make district playoffs. We’d also like to be one of the top two teams in our division,” Temple said. “We’d also like to make more power play goals and limit the goals against us.”

Temple said that the team has had more power play goals already this season compared to last year when they went 4-14-2. He believes that the team as a whole is improving.

“We’re playing good hockey. Our penalties are down and our shots on net are up. We’re improving all over,” Temple said.

This year’s team is young but the veteran seniors are stepping up to lead the team, Temple said. Players Luke Freitas, Nick Ferretti, Matt Demers and goalie Ryan Venditti are all seniors working to set an example for the younger players.

“We’re overall better as a team and we’re getting systems put into place. This year the young players are really stepping up,” Temple said. “All of our defensemen are freshman and sophomores and we’ve been seeing improvement all over.”

Westborough’s next game is Saturday, January 7 at 8 p.m. at the Northstar Arena in Westborough.
