WESTBOROUGH, Mass. – Would you do anything to help the New England Patriots win the Super Bowl this year? The Travis Family of Westborough would. In fact, they have a special ritual they do before every game. They’ve been showing their devotion for over 10 years now and they definitely plan on doing it today before the big game.
Paul Travis put together the ritual and his three sons and daughter participate in it every weekend. Though a majority of it stays the same, they try and bring something new to it every game.
“We live for this. We think it really helps them win,” Travis said. “We change it up all the time to try and keep it fresh.”
The ritual begins with the passing of the Patriots flag that Travis made himself. Each participant has to come up with his or her own unique way of carrying it. Then, someone declares war on the opposing team and triumphantly places the flag in the ground.
“Every week we elect someone to do the declaration. They declare war against the other team. People adlib a lot as they go,” Travis said. “It’s up to everyone to come to the ceremony with different things to do.”
The ritual is always creative, Travis said, and he’d like to see it on the Jumbotron at a game someday.
“It was a vision I had years ago. We had to do something different,” Travis said.
Travis said this weekend his family expects a lot of Pats fans to watch the game at their house. Each person who attends participates in the ritual, which can make it last a fairly long time. The Travis family recreates the ritual every week, rain or shine, snow or sleet.
“If you’re going to be a true fan you have to stick with it. We do it in all weather. It’s a long tradition and we’re going to keep it going,” Travis said.
